Drug overview:

Key quote….

"Some drugs may be helpful (if used correctly) but all drugs can be harmful (if mis-
used, over used or abused)"

DEFINITION of DRUG:
Most substances that enter the body that are not nutrients or Oxygen

How do drugs enter body :

        ) Mouth = Chew, drink or swallow
        2) Needles = Injections, IV’s
        3) Smoking = Cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc
        4) Inhaling = breathing in
        5) Skin and mucous membranes = snorting, rubbing, dissolving, nasal sprays,
etc

TERMS everyone should know:

Misuse = Using a medicine in-correctly

Abuse = Using illegal drugs, overusing any drug, or using legal drugs purposely to get
“high”

Resistance = When a body adapts to a medicine so that the medicine no longer is able
to work

Tolerance = Body’s adaptation to a drug that requires more of the drug to gain the
same desired effect

Peer Pressure= act of someone trying to persuade someone else around the same age
to use drugs

Addiction= The act of really wanting a drug (can be physiological or psychological)

Dependence = Needing a drug (either Physically or Psychologically)

Psychoactive = Drugs that cause changes in the brain or brain functions, often
changing moods or behavior

Depressant= A type of drug that generally lowers body functions

Stimulant = Drugs that generally raise body functions

Hallucinogen= Drugs that trick senses into thinking things are there that are not

Inhalants = Products that are inhaled to cause a reaction in the brain or body quickly

Decision Making, Peer Pressure and Refusal:

Quite Simply...Drugs are bad.

Only medicines designed for short term use are drugs that should be used UNLESS no
other option exists.  Many people become physically dependent or addicted to drugs.
Many others become psychologically dependent based on their own weaknesses.

No matter why one starts using drugs, their effects can harm you physically,
intellectually, socially, emotionally and spiritually.

Teens need to be pro-active in order to develop refusal skills for when opportunities to
use drugs come up.

The 80's had a slogan by then first lady Nancy Reagan..."Just Say No".  How true is
that slogan these days?
