Abstinence:  = Not doing something.

For purposes of this unit, obviously the something is "Sex"

Absolute Abstinence = NO sexual activity = the ONLY 100% way to ensure
against unwanted pregnancy and you will not get a   sexually transmitted disease

Relative abstinence, a term keyed a few years ago, basically  means you are not
having sexual intercourse but you are  participating in sexual activity (such as
partner masturbation or  oral sex).  You will not get a person pregnant this way
(unless  semen somehow gets into the vagina), but you can spread  Sexually
transmitted diseases

Let's face it though.....Sex is fun. Sex feels good (usually). Sex is a blessing.
Sex is a gift.  However, there is a time and place for it.

United States culture has 4 distinct personalities:  Main Stream culture, Pop
Culture, Religious Culture:, and other culture's culture

Going backwards, some cultures believe that once a girl turns 16, they are ready
to be married and start having babies.  Some cultures still have arranged
marriages.  The United States  faces many different cultures influencing their
beliefs and sometimes, this happens.

In regards to religion, the 3 main Mono-theistic (one god) religions, Islam,
Christianity and Judaism, teach to weight until marriage to have sexual relations.
However, when marriage should occur is a different story.  In recent years, there
has been an increase in Christian teen "promises" to Abstain from sex until
marriage.

Pop Culture teaches the exact opposite..Teens today are BOMBARDED with the
message that you should have sex, be sexually active or act "Sexy".
Advertisements, types of popular clothes, music, videos, television shows and
movies all send the message that SEX and sexual activity is the thing to do!  Plus,
you should do it with as many people as possible (depending on the source of the
messages)

Mainstream culture generally teaches that young people should wait until they are
finished school and have a job before having sex BUT, if they are going to have
sex, to do it with one partner and to use "protection".

Basically, in summary, the cultural influences that come into the United States may
shape our nation's perception of when to have sex.  The 3 "main" Religious groups
generally teach to wait until marriage, pop culture teaches not to wait at all, and
main stream culture teaches to wait until you're a mature adult but if you're going
to do it, do it safely.

How to apply this on your own life:

1) First choice = Abstinence! Wait to Have sex.

2) Set your sexual limitations BEFORE you get into a hot and heavy relationship.
Know what you will allow and what you will say NO to

3) Don't put yourself in unsafe situations where someone may try to hurt or rape
you

4) Don't out yourself in private situations where hormones take over and it's hard
to stop
